Assets owned by one spouse before marriage or received during marriage by gift or inheritance, typically not divided in divorce.
Example
Her inheritance from her grandmother remained separate property and was not divided.
Canadian Equivalent
In Canada, this is referred to as Excluded Property (gifts, inheritances, pre-marriage assets excluded from division).
