NEW YORK CIVIL PRACTICE LAW AND RULES (CPLR) New York State | For Informational Purposes Only CPLR § 4501 Self-incrimination § 4501. Self-incrimination. A competent witness shall not be excusedfrom answering a relevant question, on the ground only that the answermay tend to establish that he owes a debt or is otherwise subject to acivil suit. This section does not require a witness to give an answerwhich will tend to accuse himself of a crime or to expose him to apenalty or forfeiture, nor does it vary any other rule respecting theexamination of a witness.
