NEW YORK DOMESTIC RELATIONS LAW (Chapter 14) § 12 — Marriage, how solemnized DRL § 12 Marriage, how solemnized /legislation/laws/DOM/A3 § 12. Marriage, how solemnized. No particular form or ceremony isrequired when a marriage is solemnized as herein provided by a clergymanor magistrate, or one-day marriage officiant as designated by a town orcity clerk pursuant to section eleven-d of this article, but the partiesmust solemnly declare in the presence of a clergyman, magistrate, orsuch one-day marriage officiant and the attending witness or witnessesthat they take each other as spouses. In every case, at least onewitness beside the clergyman, magistrate, or such one-day marriageofficiant must be present at the ceremony.The preceding provisions of this chapter, so far as they relate to themanner of solemnizing marriages, shall not affect marriages among thepeople called friends or quakers; nor marriages among the people of anyother denominations having as such any particular mode of solemnizingmarriages; but such marriages must be solemnized in the mannerheretofore used and practiced in their respective societies ordenominations, and marriages so solemnized shall be as valid as if thisarticle had not been enacted.
