Potter's background is unusually broad for a family law practitioner. She earned her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 2000 and returned for an LL.M. in Taxation in 2002, following an M.B.A. from Howard University and a B.A. in Accounting, magna cum laude, from the University of West Alabama. That combination of tax, accounting, and business training informs her approach to divorces involving business interests, retirement assets, and property division under Texas community property law.

She is also licensed in Florida and admitted before the Fifth, Seventh, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeals, the Southern District of Texas, and the Middle District of Florida. She is a member of the Texas Bar College and has no public disciplinary history with the State Bar of Texas.
